This is from handwritten notes I made ofer the last couple weeks, with many more items to be added as I clean up my notes.   The grocery list will be an easy way to replenish things as needed.

Will finish the initial list this week and add to it over the weekend while we are camping at Land Between the Lakes with the ADV Rider people.

Traveling on the City of New Orleans

 Traveling south on Ilinois Central City of New Orleans... many side roads in sight...   must return one day to  explore.

As we round Lake Ponchetrain the dirt rods wind between the pavement... looks like trails to record on two wheels.   This is turning into an interesting scouring adventure.

 Looking further... roads leading out across fields must be great rides... who knows what lurks beyond?  Food?   Beer?

 Mix of graded dirt and grassy farm access roads.  all tempting.   Will have to retrace these steps on two wheels and document the details.

 Another day, more wanders...  restaurants, pubs, music venues...  all interesting discoveries.

Happy Spring!    Live, now back in IL for a while.   Will expand on my FL travels as the days go by... let me just say that the 6-week adventure with g/f Donna was super and we are planning to upgrade out vehicle situation presently.  Stay tuned for our toy-hauler planning and future travels.

In the meantime, here's just a hint of what went on bike-wise during out hop-scotch vacation.  Will add pics and videos as time permits.

 Florida is a great place to meet friends and play in the middle of winter.  Will have to consider a longer stay next year... or maybe head west.

Riding the Squares

Star date March 4, 2015, Location: somewhere west of Daytona, Florida.

I will fill in some blanks later, but now I'm in northern Florida getting ready for bike week, having enjoyed six or eight weeks touring with my girlfriend and life is good.  She is now back in IL sitting out the balance of winter.

Last Saturday I took to the trails in South Florida in an area called "the squares", east of Everglades city in a national Park. The guys I wrode with live down here in Florida for the entire winter and they have been wriding every weekend.  I have been vacationing and getting out of shape.  Three hours

into the ride my muscle system completely gave out. We had a great ride. I would do it all over. I need, about three times a week, to get myself back in shape but by noon I had to park the bike and send the other guys ahead.  I gobbled down a candy bar and a bottle of water and relaxed for an hour. I can tell it's going to take weeks to be in shape for this season and I only have until Saturday for the ADV writer trans-Florida ride.   250 miles eash day... lots of sand... I'll update you on that early next week.

Next week after doing the weekend ride with ADV we will camp at holiday travel RV Park for Daytona bike week with my buddy Cliff Loose and will be taking in the entertainment and a couple projects for the entire week.

When in Florida...

Yesterday a guy told me that I had the wrong bike for Florida...   He drives a HD and said that it was hardly worth having down here because things are so flat and straight.   I guess he sticks to the 30% (if that) of FL Roads that are paved...

This is my third trip to the sunny south and I have enjoyed everything, once I learned that pavement stops at the edge of the road.  First time I saw the sign reading, "Pavement Stops Here," I caught my breath...  That day with the ADV Rider group really woke me up.  Look up the video about the Kings Highway from March, 2013.  What a hoot!

Since then My travels incorporated sand from coast to coast.  El Mirage Dry Lake was the funnest because it was deep but fairly firm.  (click for video)   Last weekend was the freshest.  GS Giant Kyle Brandenburger, Naples, FL, invited me out for a day around Punta Gorda with friends Steve and Jim.  We met up at a fuel stop near the Seminole Casino and headed north of two-lane roads.  A farm looking dude at an American Legion directed us to a dirt road through orange groves west toward the Webb WMA where we spent the afternoon.   The sand roads were pretty tightly packed, but 7" of rain left plenty of puddles to contend with.

Early afternoon, before the WMA we passed the new (still under construction)Florida Track and Trail Motorsports Park where an electrical contractor invited us in for a tour on two wheels.


That motocross track is going to be quite a show place... they say there about 20 miles of trails in the park, but we didn't get further than the track.  Many thanks to the guys who let us get a sneek preview!

Finally, we rolled into the WMA and Kyle and Steve launched us into a couple hours of fun on the trails of the park.   Flat as a pancake, but plenty of scenery, including cattle on our trail, and a fair amount of muck.  We had several dead-ends, due to either fences, downed trees or just deep looking swamps that had engulfed the trails following recent rains.  Nobody got stuck, although Steve was so far off course (trying to get out of a swamp) that we could hardly see his helmet through the brush.

Let's see what Kyle can scout up for March 1st when I get back to Ft Myers to start another two-wheels-only motorcycle month from here in Ft Myers, FL.
