Pre dawn, somewhere... the rumble of snoring is is slowly muffled by groans, slurps of java and the klink of wrenches busting knuckles into the second day of the challenge. Welcome to Day-Two of the 2016 LA-B-!
Jeff Kurtz If you would... any Giants with trackers that we didn't have details for (which is most of you...) Please PM a link to me. Meanwhile I'm headed back to zzz-land to prepare for a grueling day behind the keyboard(s). Have fun for us!
Kyle L. Brandenburger Do they follow the same track (route) as last year?
Eric Hall Hard to say. Some tracks will be the same
Ian Schmeisser Due to environmental reasons, there's a general route but they do alternate from year to year. This used to be a huge *race* until the desert tortoise people made that not possible.

Jeff Kurtz dunno. and they won't know until roll charts are passed out this morning.
Brian C. Englund Some same, some different. Red Rock Canyon is a staple.
Kyle L. Brandenburger So you have some advantage to doing it every year, besides the experience.
Eric Hall Hard to without my computer
Kyle L. Brandenburger Since it's "not a race" stop and give us some update photos and video as you go.

Kevin Moto Red Rock sets apart the men from the boys!

That is exactly where Landon Norman became my hero last year. ...See More

Brian C. Englund Crying now. Goddamned bad Mexican food!
Kevin Moto I know you're the king of excuses.... But really? That's weak!
Jeff Kurtz Let's not have a visual on that.
Kevin Moto Brian hopefully you packed properly!
Brian C. Englund Imma ride poopy drawers and rock it, just to spite Kevin Moto. You're not hard till you kill it in Red Rock with a load in your shorts!
Jeff Kurtz What bikes are you guys on? The audience is growing and needs to be edumacrafted.
Kyle L. Brandenburger Guess. Brian on F800 Kevin on HP2 and the rest on those little fussy orange things.
Kevin Moto Brian C. Englund Landon Norman there were no pics of beers being consumed at the Barstow finish last night. What happened?
Landon Norman Everyone pretty much crashed out, you weren't here to keep everyone going.

Installed the SuperDeck III

This was an intereting week.   Drove the truck to Hadley, PA and picked up my AmeriDeck SuperDeck III direct from the factory.  Their installer was away that day so I went door-to-door pitching the deck and looking for someone to lend a hand making the installation.

Over near Youngstorn, OH I was refered to two guys in an old Texaco station that took up my offer and let me do the install there.   While they finished a truck they were working on, I found shade in a carwash stall and managed to un-buncle the power cables and get a head start ont he wiring.  I ran the battery cables over the bulkhead and under the cab to the truck battery.  Bill at the garage mounted the 60amp breaker and made the connection to the positive terminal.  The other lead went to a ground and the deck was alive!

We pressed the "Down" button and the deck lifted off the truck and onto the pavement behind the truck.  We drilled two 1/2" holes through the deck where required and bolted the SuperDeck III in place.   Had we knows what we were doing in the first place we could have been done in less than an hour.

I no sooner started down the interstate toward home when I saw a Harley rider on the shoulder working on his 1973 bike.   Pulling over he explained that one cylinder had failed and now he's 20 miles from work and 20 miles from home.   We rolled the bike onto the deck and headed to his place.   Here's some footage fro the day:

I'm sure you gasped when the bike rolled away from the bulkhead...   Looks like more tie-downs are in order.  Good suggestion... add a strap around the front tire to anchor it to the bulkhead, first thing.

Also I picked up two heavy duty 'anchor points' to place in the center of the deck at the front and back.  That will make it easier to tie two bikes ini place beside each other.  My plans include adding extra tail lights and a caution flasher to be used while roadside...   The company can also sells wheel chocks but I'll shop for those online eventually.  A little anti-skid paint on the deck is certain to be a good idea for wet weather.

Give me a call if you need a lift or have questions about getting an AmeriDeck SuperDeck III for yourself!

Relatives to Hand Held devices...

Here are a few things that are standard equipment in cars and trucks…  These are features that require the driver to take their eyes and at least one hand OFF THE ROAD!  Why aren’t they all converted to voice actuated?

Push Button Radios / physical CD’s
Cup Holders vs camelback’s
Lip Stick and vanity mirrors?
Air conditioning controls
Instrument clusters (soon to be incorporated into motorcycle helmet screens.

No wonder, “I didn’t see him.”

2015 BMW NightRiders Husker Rally

What a surprise this weekend was...   Mid August, headed home from Yellowstone and Tetons after the BMW MOA rally...

Mid morning, only 50 miles into the day, we pulled into Franklin, NE, and I pulled over to turn on the windshield-mounted GoPro...  then the truck hesitated...   Depressed the pedal and nothing...   truck would move at idle speed but nothing more...   pumping the pedal brought lots of smoke but no power.

Long story short... local mechanic suggested two Chevy dealers and then realized the bike on the Toy Hauler deck was a BMW .   "There's a BMW rally here this weekend!"   Hence we joined the 33rd BMW NightRiders Huskers rally for the next 6 days.

The mechanic towed the camper out to the fairgrounds.   AAA towed the truck to a dealer.   We enjoyed 115 new friends and great food for the next 6 days... at the rally price of $35 each... including food and camping!!  Thanks to all the staff at the rally and to Richard and John for getting us connected.

Will consider this rally as a destination net year... they have hundreds of miles of gravel and "not maintained" roads to play with.

Here's some of the imagery from the weekend:
